First put into operation in 1904, the New York City subway is one of the world's most extensive public transport systems in combination with its bus operations. The system is comprised of 468 stations with 277 of them located underground. Although called "the subway," implying underground operations, almost half of the system runs on above-ground rights-of-way. Additionally, the New York city subway system has over 800 miles of track (but uses only 660 miles), more than 31,000 turnstiles and 734 information booths. The New York City subway system is used by almost 4.5 million passengers everyday and is open 24 hours a day seven days a week. It is the most convenient way to travel the city and is far less expensive then taking a taxi.
